Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Bambang Soesatyo underscored the need for Indonesia to devise grand strategies to achieve food self-sufficiency to mitigate a potential food crisis in the future.
Speaking at the 2024 Annual Session at the Parliamentary Complex, Jakarta, on Friday, he underscored the need for Indonesia to ditch its reliance on imported food materials.
Soesatyo remarked that the constant growth of the population in Indonesia had prompted it to ensure sufficient food stocks. On that note, he emphasized the importance of ensuring that Indonesia's agriculture sector can survive the existing challenge.
As the backbone of the country's food availability, the speaker said the sector is currently facing challenges in the form of shrinking agricultural areas, stagnant production rate, increased frequency of pests and vegetation diseases, booming production costs, and also climate change.
He then drew attention to the energy sector, saying that Indonesia is committed to gradually suppressing greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the use of fossil-based energy and transitioning to the utilization of new and renewable energy.
According to the lawmaker, energy transition constitutes a major initiative that requires a huge amount of investment and might take more than five years to be fully achieved.
Furthermore, Soesatyo highlighted the government's push for industrial downstreaming, noting that it has significantly boosted the value of Indonesia's mineral processing industry.
He also underlined that as the country with the largest nickel reserves in the world, Indonesia has successfully shot up the value of its export of the mineral owing to the downstreaming policy.
The 2024 Annual Session, highlighting "New Nusantara, Advanced Indonesia" as its theme, featured the MPR Annual Session, Joint Session of the House of Representatives (DPR) and Regional House of Representatives (DPD), and DPR Plenary Session.
During the event held annually a day prior to the celebration of Indonesia's Independence Day, President Joko Widodo delivered reports on the performance of state institutions and the government's statements on the 2025 Draft State Budget and its financial notes.
