Jakarta (ANTARA) - Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar has underscored that the Second Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) document will support Indonesia's target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 or earlier.

At the "Second NDC Public Communication" event here on Tuesday, she informed that the Second NDC document includes an updated commitment to contributing to climate action with the no-backsliding principle.

She said that in the Second NDC, which is targeted to be completed this year, Indonesia will refer to the scenario of limiting an increase in temperature to not more than 1.5 degrees Celsius.

"Indonesia's commitment to achieving the NDC targets and realizing the vision toward net-zero emission by 2060 or sooner will highly need cooperation from various sectors and all stakeholders," she added.

The minister disclosed that the pilot results of the Second NDC have shown that Indonesia could achieve an emission reduction rate of up to 97–103 percent by 2060 or even, reach negative emissions.

"(It can be realized) with a note that hard work like what we are currently doing, current policies, and current operations can be maintained and they must be sustainable," she added.

The Second NDC is different from the Enhanced NDC, which is currently in effect, in certain aspects. One of them is the addition of the marine sector and the upstream oil and gas sub-sector as well as a new type of greenhouse gas, namely hydrofluorocarbon (HFC).

The Indonesian government is planning to hand over the document to the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) before the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Azerbaijan in November 2024.
