Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Integrated Village Economic Transformation (TEKAD) program is present as the government's initiative aimed at helping rural residents achieve self-reliance, according to Deputy Minister of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration (PDTT) Paiman Raharjo.

Speaking at the TEKAD National Workshop in Jakarta on Monday, Raharjo remarked that through the program, President Joko Widodo's administration is striving to guide rural residents to identify their villages' potential and train them to harness it.

"Hence, this (program) will indirectly lead to the emergence of people capable of independently managing their economies," he pointed out.

The minister further noted that the TEKAD program, rolled out by his ministry, is also meant to stimulate the emergence of new businesses through the provision of various conveniences related to capital, human resources, and technology.

"This program will ultimately help strengthen small industries. Despite being small in scale, such industries play a vital role in people's economy. This economic empowerment program exists as a means to assist small industries in leveling up their economies," he stressed.

TEKAD has been designated as one of the government's national priority programs, with the main objective of empowering rural people, especially those residing in Indonesia's eastern regions, to be able to make contributions to the actualization of sustainable economic growth in the country.

The program is expected to act as an instrument for the government to assist villages in improving their governance and boosting people's participation in making the most of natural resources by utilizing effective technologies.

Since 2020, TEKAD has been implemented in 1,110 villages scattered across nine provinces and 25 districts. In detail, the program has reached the eastern provinces of East Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, North Maluku, Papua, Highland Papua, South Papua, Central Papua, Southwest Papua, and West Papua.
