Manado, N Sulawesi (ANTARA) - The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has urged residents to stay clear of Mount Awu's danger zone in Sangihe Islands District, North Sulawesi.

"Based on continuous visual and instrumental monitoring, Mount Awu's activity level remains at level three," P. Hadi Wijaya, head of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG), informed in a report shared on Monday.

The report reveals that ongoing magma intrusion toward the surface and the build-up of pressure are evident from visual observations, earthquakes, and deformation data.

Fluctuating deep and shallow volcanic earthquakes indicate the accumulation of pressure.

Inflationary deformation at Puncak Station and recorded low-frequency earthquakes suggest the continued accumulation of pressure and magma movement.

A rapid increase in volcanic earthquakes could signal an imminent explosive eruption.

High-intensity local tectonic earthquakes could also trigger increased volcanic activity.

Significant earthquakes with sustained energy could rupture the lava dome and cause an explosive eruption.

Prolonged shallow earthquakes indicate the ongoing accumulation of pressure, which can lead to an explosive eruption. Historical records show that such eruptions can be accompanied by hot clouds.

Hadi emphasized that at the current activity level of three, the public and tourists should avoid entering a five-kilometer radius of the crater.

The public has been urged to follow the recommendations of the Geological Agency and not be misled by false information.

Mount Awu is a stratovolcano located on Sangir Island, a part of the Sangihe Islands chain in North Sulawesi.

Known for its powerful eruptions and the potential for devastating consequences, the 1,320-meter volcano is a significant geological feature of the region.

It has a long history of eruptions, dating back to 1640. Several of those eruptions have been particularly destructive, resulting in significant loss to life and property.
