Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian urologists successfully performed the first telerobotic kidney cyst surgery in the country from the I.G.N.G Ngoerah Hospital, Bali, on a patient at dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) Jakarta.

"I am amazed by our urologists' ability to perform telerobotic surgery. This proves that telerobotic surgery can be executed, including for kidney cyst. We can start from the vertical hospitals, to be expanded to other hospitals," Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin remarked after witnessing the surgery on Friday.

He noted that facilities for telerobotic surgery will be readied at four hospitals, namely RSCM Jakarta, Hasan Sadikin Hospital Bandung, I.G.N.G Ngoerah Hospital Bali, and Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Hospital Purwokerto, Central Java.

"Obstetrics surgery can also be carried out at the facility. This achievement shows our technological advantage. The doctors who participated also said there was no delay during the surgery," Sadikin remarked.

He expressed hope that the application of telerobotic technology would help to address various health-related problems in Indonesia, especially geographical constraints, to bring health services to remote areas with difficult access.

Meanwhile, President Director of RSCM Supriyanto remarked that the technology helps to realize more precise patient care with minimal incisions.

"This hospital intends to provide the best treatment for patients, and this telerobotic (procedure) involves minimal incisions for a more precise result. Even though the equipment is expensive, we will do it," he noted.

Meanwhile, Head of the Telerobotic Team in today's telerobotic surgery procedure at RSCM, Dr Ponco Birowo, stated that before performing telerobotic surgery on patients, urologists had conducted trials with props to ensure patient safety.

"We have also prepared for unfavorable conditions, including conversion of action from telerobotic to laparoscopy," he remarked.

Birowo highlighted that the telerobotic surgery is carried out through collaboration with network provider Telkomsel to provide a 5G network covering one thousand sites across 56 cities in Indonesia.
