Bali (ANTARA) - Indonesia intends to explore the expansion of utilizing geothermal energy in African countries at the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF), according to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

"Based on our expertise in developing geothermal, we will focus on geothermal (for cooperation with African countries)," the ministry's secretary general Dadan Kusdiana stated during the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF) here on Tuesday.

He further highlighted Africa's significant geothermal potential, including in Kenya, which is estimated to produce 10 thousand megawatts (MW) of electricity.

The exploration of two blocks of geothermal energy sources in Kenya will be carried out in late 2024 or early 2025 at the latest.

The geothermal field exploration will be carried out through collaboration between the subsidiary of state-owned Pertamina, Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), Africa Geothermal International Limited (AGIL), and Geothermal Development Company (GDC) for development in the Suswa and Longonot Blocks.

Meanwhile, Kusdiana said, Indonesia has also started diversifying its industry of energy sources by transitioning to green fuels.

Indonesia, according to him, has successfully implemented a shift from diesel to biodiesel using palm-based fuel.

"This year, we mix 35 percent of biodiesel into diesel fuel. Next year, I think we do not prepare for increasing the percentage to 40," he informed.

In terms of energy transition, he said, Indonesia has good experience in managing human resources, technology, and financing.

Indonesia is even considered to be a country with the most complete resources in terms of renewable energy.

He said he believes that given its experience in downstreaming the sub-mineral industry, such as the lithium battery industry, Indonesia could support energy transition projects in African countries.

"We hope to develop our cooperation and we are sure you can learn a lot from Indonesia's experience," he added.
