Sadikin reported this to President Joko Widodo during a speech at the inauguration of the Surabaya Vertical Hospital building, East Java, Friday.
"This hospital will treat diseases up to a certain level. Those needing modern health services do not need to go to Jakarta," Sadikin remarked.
He explained that a budget of Rp2 trillion (US$130 million) was spent for the construction of the Surabaya Vertical Hospital, which is designed to have services equivalent to the Cipto Mangunkusumo National Central General Hospital, Harapan Kita Hospital, and Dharmais Cancer Hospital.
"All patients from Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, and East Nusa Tenggara were drawn to the Surabaya Vertical Hospital," the minister remarked.
He revealed that the ministry would place the best doctors at Surabaya Vertical Hospital for a certain period to improve the quality and standard of service to be equivalent to similar hospitals in Jakarta.
"For example, Luthfi Gatam, for orthopedic spine specialists, and Dante Saksono Harbuwono, for internal medicine, will be asked to practice here," Sadikin remarked.
He stated that the Surabaya Vertical Hospital was built on land earlier used for skin and venereal diseases health services since 1951.
The land had been abandoned and not used optimally until the COVID-19 pandemic.
"During COVID-19, I just realized that the land was used to treat patients with an area of more than six hectares," he noted.
He then emphasized the importance of building this hospital since the Health Ministry does not yet have similar facilities in Surabaya.
"With this hospital, people in Eastern Indonesia can have better access to health services without going to Jakarta or Singapore," he concluded.
