"I have asked for permission from the President, as well as the State Secretary Minister (Pratikno), that I will resign by September 22 (2024)," he stated while visiting Sunda Kelapa Mosque in Central Jakarta on Friday.
September 22 is the date when the Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPU) will officially declare the governor-deputy governor candidates for the November 27 polls.
Anung said that he will resign only after his candidacy in the local polls is made official. His current responsibilities prevent him from resigning immediately from office.
"I need to prepare for the Cabinet meeting at Nusantara on September 11," he noted.
Anung has been nominated as a candidate for the post of Jakarta governor by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P). Former Banten governor and actor Rano Karno will be his running mate.
The President's special staff coordinator, Ari Dwipayana, confirmed that the cabinet secretary has handed his resignation to President Widodo.
Per Anung's request, the presidential decision to honorably discharge him from office will be inked only on September 22.
"In principle, the President will approve (the resignation). He respects the political rights of his ministers to be the candidate in regional elections," Dwipayana said.
Meanwhile, President Widodo on Friday confirmed that he has approved the resignation of another Cabinet minister, Tri Rismaharini, who holds the social affairs portfolio, following the announcement of her candidacy for the post of East Java governor by PDI-P.
Presidential Decision No. 100/P of 2024 signed by the President honorably relieved Rismaharini from her ministerial duties. In her place, Widodo has appointed Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy, as the acting social affairs minister.
Indonesia will hold simultaneous Regional Head Elections to elect governors and deputy governors, mayors and vice mayors, and district heads and deputy district heads on November 27.
