Jakarta (ANTARA) - Marking its 79th anniversary, the Indonesian Navy opened its naval bases on Saturday to showcase to the public its defense system comprising warships, amphibious tanks, and tactical vehicles.

While opening the event at the Fleet Command Headquarters Base in Jakarta, Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Muhammad Ali, explained that the activity is part of the celebrations for the Navy's 79th Anniversary on September 10, 2024.

"We opened some bases to increase the knowledge of the community, especially the younger generation, that we are a maritime and archipelagic country, and 70 percent of our country is the sea," Ali noted in a press conference.

To this end, he affirmed that the Navy carries the slogan of "I Love the Sea" as the theme of its anniversary this year.

The theme also became a campaign to foster the love of the sea and the role of the Navy in protecting the sea.

Several tactical vehicles from the Marine Corps, as well as combat equipment and weapons from the Frogman Forces Command (Kopaska), were exhibited at the Fleet Command Headquarters.

Jakarta's residents who thronged the area on Saturday morning were able to witness miniatures of Navy warships, historical dioramas, as well as antique cars, jeeps, and sedans.

In addition to the Fleet Command HQ in Jakarta, the Navy opened exhibitions at the Fleet Command Base I in Tanjungpinang, the Fleet Command Base II in Surabaya, and the Fleet Command III in Sorong.

"The public can know what kind of defense equipment are in the naval bases because we are a big maritime country, so the Navy must be strong," Ali remarked.

On the same occasion, the Navy provided staple food packages, health services, and blood donations.
