Daeng Sutisna, an official from the Sukabumi Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), stated on Saturday that a family of six in Calincing Village suffered significant damage to their home due to the earthquakes. However, there were no fatalities.
The displaced family has been temporarily staying with relatives due to the severe damage to their home. The sub-district government has committed to providing an aid package to assist them, Sutisna said.
Indonesia, situated on the Circum-Pacific Belt or Ring of Fire, is prone to frequent earthquakes due to the convergence of multiple tectonic plates.
West Java is one of the Indonesian provinces vulnerable to earthquakes.
A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck the southern region of West Java on January 3. It was caused by the deformation of the Indo-Australian tectonic plate.
Due to its epicenter and depth, the earthquake was the result of the Indo-Australian tectonic plate subducting beneath the Eurasian plate.
According to Daryono, the Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency's Earthquake and Tsunami Center, the earthquake's epicenter was located about 77 kilometers (km) southwest of Sukabumi at a depth of 63 km.
On November 21, 2022, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Cianjur District resulting in at least 318 deaths, 14 missing persons, and 7,729 injuries.
On December 26, 2004, Aceh, Indonesia's westernmost province, was struck by the deadliest earthquake on record. The magnitude 9.3 earthquake triggered a devastating tsunami.
The catastrophe, which also affected certain coastal areas in countries such as Thailand, Sri Lanka, and India, reportedly killed at least 230,000 people in Aceh.
