Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto expressed hope that the newly appointed Russian Ambassador to Indonesia, Sergei Gennadievich Tolchenov, would improve cooperation between both nations.

Subianto made the statement while receiving Ambassador Tolchenov's visit to his office on Monday (September 9), as stated by Head of the Public Relations Bureau of the Defense Ministry, Brigadier General Edwin Adrian Sumantha, on Tuesday.

Sumantha remarked that the meeting was a reflection of the strong relations between Indonesia and Russia, especially in facing various security challenges and maintaining global stability.

"I hope we can deepen cooperation in the defense sector. Together, we can overcome common security challenges and contribute to global peace and prosperity," Prabowo told the Russian ambassador as quoted from an official statement from his office.

On that occasion, he also expressed gratitude for Ambassador Tolchenov's visit.

Ambassador Tolchenov officially took on a new role as Russia's representative to Indonesia, replacing Ambassador Lyudmila Vorobieva, who, in November 2023, also bid adieu to the ranks of the Indonesian Defense Ministry before returning to her country.

Prabowo, during his international working trip to several European countries at the end of July 2024, also visited Russia and met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin Presidential Palace.

At the meeting, Prabowo and Putin discussed several strategic issues, including those related to the free trade zone agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union and Indonesia pertaining to investment and defense cooperation.

On the occasion, Prabowo also supported Russia's plan to open a Consulate General in Bali.

This year, Indonesia and Russia are commemorating 75 years of diplomatic relations.

The two countries established cooperation in various fields, especially defense, including through a joint exercise between the Indonesian Navy and the Russian Navy in Surabaya, East Java, which is scheduled in November 2024 for the first time.
