Medan (ANTARA) - Bali won its first-ever National Sports Week (PON) table tennis gold medal after Komang Sugita and Made Sisca Pratiwi emerged victorious in the final match of the mixed doubles event of the Aceh-North Sumatra PON.

At the Angsaputra Sports Hall, Medan City, North Sumatra, on Sunday, the Bali's representatives prevailed over East Java's duo Affan Mauluduna Pratama and Dwi Oktaviani Sugiarto in a five-set final match.

In the beginning of the first set, Komang and Sisca went full throttle by leading 3-0 before reaching a scoreline of 10-7, with one more point needed to win the set.

However, Affan and Dwi managed to force them to play a deuce thrice before eventually stealing a 15-13 opening victory.

The two teams demonstrated a fierce rivalry in the second set, alternately scoring a point and leading in the scoreline. After showing three tied scorelines, the set was won by the Balinese couple, with a scoreline of 11-6.

In the third set, both pairs reached two deuces at the scorelines of 10-10 and 11-11. Owing to their frequent powerful smashes, Komang and Sisca eventually secured a win with a final score of 13-11.

The fourth set did not witness a decline in tension, as the two teams resumed their fierce battle, recording a tied scoreline of 5-5. However, East Java's mixed representatives successfully secured their second victory, necessitating a decisive fifth set.

In the gold medal set, the East Javan athletes opened the scoring. Their Balinese opponents, however, responded with powerful smashes that presented them with two consecutive points.

The Balinese duo then continued to dictate the flow of the game before emerging as victors with a scoreline of 11-6, presenting their home province with its first-ever gold medal in the sport.
