"An assessment is being carried out," Garut District regional secretary Nurdin Yana, who is concurrently the Garut BPBD head, confirmed on Wednesday.
According to an official report from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appearing on its website, the 5.0-magnitude earthquake on Wednesday struck at 09:41:08 local time, 24 kilometers southeast of Bandung District, West Java, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Yana ensured all his ranks had moved to assess the Garut area to gauge the extent of damage caused by the earthquake.
"For now, we still have no information on the damage," he stated.
Chief Executive of Garut BPBD, Aah Anwar Saefuloh, said his side had ordered all sub-district heads and other agencies to assess their respective areas to decipher the impact after the Bandung earthquake while reminding them to immediately report any damage found to the Garut BPBD for follow-up.

"The sub-district and village heads should provide the latest update on the situation in their respective areas. Please report if there are victims affected by the earthquake," he emphasized.
The BMKG stated that the activity of the Garsela fault triggered a series of shallow earthquakes in Bandung District this morning.
Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, stated in Jakarta that a source mechanism analysis indicated that the activity of the Garsela Fault in West Java had a downward shear movement.
His side also confirmed that the earthquake cannot potentially cause a tsunami.
The BMKG recorded five aftershocks until 10:10 local time, with the largest strength of 3.1 magnitude. No reports of damage caused by the earthquake had yet been received.
