"I was in Jakarta for a nuclear research project ten years ago, and when I come back here now, I see real development in the (nuclear development) sector," IAEA expert Mehmet Ceyhan said while opening a workshop on the nuclear technology cooperation project.
The agenda was entitled “Inter-regional Workshop on Self-Evaluation of Infrastructure Development for New Nuclear Power Programs” and took place here on Monday.
Ceyhan further noted that Indonesia's nuclear technology is progressing under much better management than before.
In response, the National Research and Innovation Agency's (BRIN's) deputy for development policy, Mego Pinandito, said that the progress of nuclear development in Indonesia can be seen through the longevity and productivity of the nation's mini-reactors, which have been active since 1964.
"Now, united under BRIN (management), we have three nuclear reactors for research purposes in Yogyakarta, Bandung, and Serpong (in South Tangerang)," he added.
The research conducted by BRIN on nuclear technology, he said, has included the implementation of non-destructive tests on materials, the development of superior seeds for agricultural use, and gamma irradiation for export commodities.
Besides conducting work and research on products, the agency is developing polytechnics for nuclear studies to ensure human resource regeneration for the nation's nuclear technology sector, Pinandito informed.
"The process is ongoing and we expect to develop it in more places outside Java," the BRIN deputy added.
He said that he also expects the technical cooperation with the IAEA to benefit Indonesia in efforts to strengthen its nuclear technology development program and become a facilitator for other countries that are keen to develop nuclear energy.
