"Today, we come here to support ladies and gentlemen to achieve prosperity, providing you with basic needs, including those related to health and education, at the least," he told scavengers at the TPST on Monday morning.
The assistance handed out by the Ministry of Social Affairs to local residents includes 2,055 packages of personal protective equipment for scavengers, 389 packages of groceries and nutrients, 44 disability support tools, 14 packages of entrepreneurial aid, and 49 packages of sports and educational equipment.
Minister Yusuf symbolically handed over the assistance, with the total value crossing Rp650 billion (US$43 million), at the Sumur Batu Village office and Sumur Batu Public Elementary School II.
He made the most of his visit to Bekasi to have a dialogue with scavengers, harboring their aspirations, including regarding health insurance and employment social security.
In response, the minister told local residents that the central government had established cooperation with regional governments to cover the medical needs of vulnerable people with services offered by state health insurer BPJS Kesehatan.
"As for employment social security, we are currently in the process (of finding a solution)," he remarked.
The minister expressed hope that all the assistance provided would genuinely help the local people in need.
Apart from delivering the assistance and conversing with scavengers, Yusuf also reviewed the implementation of medical examinations as well as an anti-bullying and violence social campaign at Sumur Batu Public Elementary School II.
