Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Law and Human Rights will recognize regional governments for their commitment to and success in upholding human rights.

During a discussion on Monday, Dhahana Putra, the ministry's Director General of Human Rights, stated that these awards not only serve as recognition for the regions but also act as motivation for regional governments to improve human rights-related services.

He explained that the assessment process is currently in its third phase—verification and final evaluation—which involves 544 districts and cities from 38 provinces.

Regions are classified based on their level of human rights awareness for the evaluation. In addition to the assessment, the Directorate General of Human Rights is considering complaints received from the public through complaint services as part of a transparency and accountability mechanism.

Putra emphasized that under Law Number 59 of 2024 on the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN), human rights are a central pillar in reinforcing Indonesia's national ideology, Pancasila.

"Human rights are not only enshrined in the Constitution but also form the basis for fair and equitable national development," he said.

The discussion on Monday involved an assessment team made up of high-ranking officials from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, academics, and representatives from non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

This team is responsible for evaluating the progress and setbacks of regions regarding human rights actions, as well as the resolution of alleged human rights violations that have not yet been addressed by the districts and cities.

He expressed hope that, with the active participation of various stakeholders, the assessment would lead to credible and accountable decisions, encouraging regional governments to further promote human rights in their areas.

The final results of the assessment will be announced during the Human Rights Day commemoration on December 10.
