Jakarta (ANTARA) - The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Commemoration Summit in Aceh from October 8–10, 2024, will include a visit to a mass cemetery of the 2004 Aceh earthquake and tsunami victims.

This information was conveyed by chief of the Aceh Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBA), Teuku Nara Setia, during an online broadcast on the kick-off of the 2024 Aceh DRR Summit, which was followed online from here on Tuesday.

Setia informed that thousands of participants, including from Aceh, disaster-resilience delegations from 38 Indonesian provinces, as well as foreign delegates from Australia and Indo-Pacific countries, will take part in the grave visit.

The main purpose of the visit, he said, will be to remember and pray for the around 47 thousand victims of the 2004 Aceh tsunami.

In addition, the visit is expected to serve as a moment of reflection for all participants to be better prepared in facing potential future disasters.

"This grave visit activity will become a spiritual resource for all of us to learn from the Aceh earthquake and tsunami 20 years ago," he said.

The Aceh government, as the host of 2024 DRR, informed that it has made careful preparations to make the multinational event a success.

Setia said that the preparations have comprised managing the budget and technical matters for the event.

DRR is one of the government's programs carried out by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) in collaboration with the Australian government. It aims to strengthen community capacity to anticipate disaster risks and determine disaster response.

Last year, the DRR event was held in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi.
