Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is urging Indonesians to learn from the people of Aceh about recovering from the devastating disaster that struck the province in 2004.

This message was conveyed by Prasinta Dewi, the agency's Deputy for Disaster Prevention, during the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Month event in Banda Aceh, Aceh, on Tuesday.

The event, held from October 8 to 10, aimed to boost cross-sector preparedness for disasters.

Aceh was chosen as the host of this year's DRR Month event, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the 2004 tsunami, which killed over 177,000 people after a 9.1-magnitude undersea earthquake.

Dewi explained that through the event, BNPB hopes people will learn how to recover from such devastating disasters and improve preparedness in disaster risk reduction efforts.

"We reflect on this, not to evoke sadness but to learn, educate, and share the efforts that have been made and how we can develop them further," Dewi remarked.

She emphasized that the DRR Month also aims to strengthen community resilience against potential disasters.

Dewi added that the most important aspect is for communities to understand the location of their homes, the disaster threat level, and evacuation routes in the event of a disaster.

Meanwhile, Acting Secretary of Aceh Province, Azwardi, stated that the Aceh government is using this event to educate the public.

"This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Aceh tsunami, so there are many lessons we can share with the community," he noted.
