Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has emphasized the use of an evidence-based approach to formulate sustainable and effective policies for the country.

"The approach (of policymaking) in our country is different from in other countries. Therefore, we must use research in decision-making, so the regulation can be based on evidence," BRIN's Deputy for Development Policy Mego Pinandito said here on Tuesday.

Speaking at a panel discussion during the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Annual Conference, he said that using evidence from scientific research results would lead to more effective policymaking in many ministries/agencies.

For instance, the approach can be used for the national policy to tackle stunting, where the coordination of ministries/agencies is needed because stunting cannot be solved by one institution alone, he added.

"Stunting is a problem that needs a complex approach, so the handling cannot be done in only one sector. This is where the role of research and innovation take part," he explained.

Pinandito said that BRIN, as a national research institution, has studied social issues that can be used as a basis for policy-making.

He assured that BRIN's Social Sciences and Humanities Research Organization meets international standards, and the research results of BRIN can be proven scientifically.

"The research results will become a material for making policy recommendations that would lead to a regulation. From Sabang to Merauke, we are a big country so it is difficult (to yield efficient results) if we only compare to other countries," he said.

Pinandito expressed the hope that Indonesia will use research and innovation more as the basis for making policies so that the policies can be more sustainable and support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
