Batam, Riau Islands (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries projected Indonesia's lobster farming to have an economic potential of up to US$53 billion by 2030.

Ministry's Director General of Aquaculture, Tb Haeru Rahayu, stated here on Wednesday that Indonesia's lobsters have extraordinary potential as compared to those of other countries. Thus, lobsters are one of the country's five mainstay commodities developed for sustainable farming modeling projects.

"Last year, the production was only 433 tons, and if I am not mistaken, the value is Rp179 billion (around US$11.45 million)," he remarked while monitoring preparations for the inauguration of a lobster farming modeling project.

Rahayu remarked that Indonesia remains focused on shrimp farming despite the high potential of lobsters.

From baby lobsters, he said, the country is estimated to earn Rp419 billion (around US$26.82 million) next year.

He expressed optimism that Indonesia would become a global supply chain leader for lobster commodities by building a cultivation model at the Marine Aquaculture Center, Batam.

"If this is successful and can be replicated by stakeholders, it would be amazing. Indonesia will become a global supply chain (leader) for lobster and shrimp after that," he affirmed.

Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono is scheduled to inaugurate the lobster farming modeling project in Batam on Thursday, October 10, 2024.

The lobster farming modeling project, with 144 lobster holes, is the fourth modeling project initiated by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries.

Three other commodities whose modeling project had been started earlier are shrimp in Kebumen, Central Java; seaweed in Wakatobi, East Sulawesi; and salinity-tolerant tilapia in Karawang, West Java.
