Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi pressed for strengthening multilateralism to ensure peace and global stability at the 12th ASEAN-United States Summit in Vientiane, Laos, on Friday.

In her speech, Marsudi called for bolstering multilateralism by alluding to Israeli forces’ attack that hit the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on October 10, labelling it as a deliberate offensive that blatantly violated international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

“We cannot remain silent when the international symbol of peace, the blue helmets, come under direct attack,” she stated while denouncing the unlawful strike that injured two Indonesian peacekeeping personnel, as cited from her ministry’s statement here.

The minister made the most of the summit to urge the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to drive his country, which enjoys a permanent seat at the UNSC, to take concrete actions to ensure that UNIFIL can carry out its vital duty in southern Lebanon.

“The ongoing violations of international law without meaningful consequences is a serious issue, undermining the credibility of the UN Security Council," she stressed.

Marsudi also highlighted three key priorities for advancing multilateralism in the context of the ASEAN-US partnership.

First, the minister pointed to efforts towards peace and stability. In this regard, she expressed hope that the United States would help ASEAN maintain its centrality by supporting the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific while respecting the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia.

She then drew attention to green energy development as the second priority for the partnership’s future, saying that ASEAN requires support from the US to create a suitable ecosystem for the electric vehicle industry and achieve emission reduction targets.

As for the final priority, the minister spotlighted digital economy development by emphasizing the importance of ASEAN and the US working together to minimize the risks of artificial intelligence being misused for cybercrimes and disinformation campaigns.

In her closing statement, Marsudi said that Indonesia expects the United States to continue contributing towards peace in Palestine.

"As a global power, the United States must stand on the right side by rejecting impunity, protecting civilians, and promoting a comprehensive two-state solution," the minister concluded.
