Vientiane, Laos (ANTARA) - Indonesian Vice President Ma'ruf Amin expressed his appreciation to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for appointing Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi as the UN Special Envoy on Water.

"I would like to thank the UN Secretary-General for entrusting Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi with the role of Special Envoy on Water. Water is life," he remarked at the ASEAN-UN Summit in Vientiane, Laos, on Friday.

Amin is leading the Indonesian delegation during the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits in Laos.

Guterres announced Marsudi's appointment as the Special Envoy on Water on September 13.

As the special envoy, Marsudi will be tasked with advancing global water agendas, particularly those related to the outcomes of the 2023 UN Water Conference.

She will be responsible for building synergy among stakeholders addressing water issues to help the international community achieve related global targets, such as Goal 6 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and preparing for the 2026 UN Water Conference.

Speaking before ASEAN leaders and Guterres, VP Amin emphasized the importance of enhancing institutional cooperation between ASEAN and the UN. He suggested that the UN establish a representative office for ASEAN in Jakarta.

"I believe it is time for the UN to have a representative for ASEAN based in Jakarta to coordinate cooperation between all UN bodies and ASEAN," he said.
