Jakarta (ANTARA) - Law Number 4 of 2024 on maternal and child welfare (KIA Law) guarantees work opportunities for women with children, according to the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection.

"This law is a guarantee for the fulfillment and protection of the rights of mothers and children, especially during the golden period, namely the first 1,000 days of life," the ministry's acting deputy of gender equality, Rini Handayani, said when contacted here on Monday.

The law was ratified on June 4, 2024, two years after the care economy received global attention through the 2022 G20 Ministerial Conference on Women's Empowerment in Bali.

The Empowerment of Women Working Group (EWWG) of the G20 lauded Indonesia, which has taken real action to fulfill the global commitment.

Indonesia is considered one of the few G20 countries that have translated global commitments and agreements into national policies, especially concerning the care economy, reducing violence against women, and gender action on climate change.

Handayani said that the care economy has been integrated and become a national policy priority in the 2025–2045 National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN).

Further, Indonesia has also issued the Road Map for the Care Economy as a guideline for government agencies and the community to implement the care economy agenda, she added.

According to her, the 2025–2045 RPJPN targets to increase women's labor force participation to 70 percent by 2045.

"Currently, women's labor force participation has only reached 54 percent, far from men's labor force participation that has reached more than 80 percent," she said.
