Jakarta (ANTARA) – Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) continues its efforts in the development of new renewable energy. This commitment is highlighted by the signing of a cooperation agreement with PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), the Integrated Marine and Logistics Sub Holding of Pertamina.

The agreement was signed by Pertamina NRE CEO John Anies and PIS CEO Yoki Firnandi at Grha Pertamina on Monday (10/14).

This collaboration aims to strengthen the synergy between PIS and PNRE in developing renewable energy-based transportation businesses, particularly concerning the transportation of green hydrogen and other sustainable fuels.

According to John Anies, CEO of Pertamina NRE, the partnership is founded on several factors, including Indonesia's strategic geographical position along international shipping routes. "Indonesia's position in international shipping lanes will provide significant opportunities to develop sustainable fuel businesses in the global maritime sector," said John.

Furthermore, projections from Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) indicate that the demand for green hydrogen is expected to surge dramatically, with the shipping sector anticipated to consume around 6 million tons of green hydrogen, primarily in the form of methanol, annually by 2028.

Additionally, a feasibility study conducted by PNRE shows that transportation costs for hydrogen, whether in the form of ammonia or methanol, account for a significant portion of the landed cost of hydrogen (LCOH) in target markets. This collaboration is expected to reduce transportation costs and create efficiencies.

PIS CEO Yoki Firnandi stated that as part of the Pertamina Group, PIS is ready to support the development of new renewable energy to expand this business portfolio in the future. "Collaboration within the Pertamina Group is essential so that all potential and business opportunities can be pursued without compromising competitiveness. PIS is ready to support the transportation needs for distribution, terminals, and ports related to the logistics and maritime transport sectors," he said.

In addition to transportation business, Yoki continued, to demonstrate commitment to energy transition business development, a project for the Jakarta Integrated Green Terminal is also underway, which could be optimized for carbon storage facilities, LNG, and other needs that can be enhanced by PNRE, such as bioethanol, ammonia, hydrogen, and more.

This partnership is also expected to strengthen Pertamina's efforts to expand its green energy portfolio and support a cleaner and more environmentally friendly energy transition in the maritime sector. As part of the Pertamina Group, Pertamina NRE is committed to promoting clean energy initiatives as an integral part of implementing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) aspects to support sustainable development goals and facilitate the energy transition to achieve net zero emissions (NZE) aspirations.
