Samarinda (ANTARA) - The Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN) is committed to designating the Indonesian language as the primary language and symbol of Nusantara Capital City (IKN), East Kalimantan province.

Director of basic services at OIKN, Suwito, said that though it has been envisioned as a global and inclusive city that welcomes local, national, and international citizens, Nusantara must ensure that Indonesian prevails as a language of unity.

"On the one hand, we envision the IKN as a comfortable place for international residents. On the other hand, we need to maintain Indonesian as a uniting language," he added in Samarinda city, East Kalimantan, on Thursday.

He affirmed that the government's plan to promote international languages, especially English, among the residents of Nusantara would not be at the expense of the Indonesian language.

"We hope that the IKN will emerge as a global city whose residents are able to speak international languages fluently while using Indonesian as the main language for daily conversations and official documents," Suwito said.

The official then commended the East Kalimantan Language Office for its dedication to guiding and assisting people and new officials serving at the OIKN in using the Indonesian language properly for written materials, such as official letters, rules, guidelines, and speech texts.

"We would like to appreciate the East Kalimantan Language Office for its outstanding guidance, which has encouraged us to continue to use Indonesian as a uniting language in Nusantara Capital City," he said.

Furthermore, Suwito emphasized that his side is committed to preserving and developing local customs and cultures to sharpen the tourism appeal of Indonesia's future seat of government.

"The IKN is designed as a smart and green city that offers unique local customs and cultures expected to draw in international tourists," he added.
