Jakarta (ANTARA) - Communication and Informatics Minister Budi Arie Setiadi has underlined the need to improve the community's digital financial literacy to curb online gambling practices.

Based on the National Survey of Financial Literacy and Inclusion (SNLIK) carried out by the Financial Services Authority (OJK), Indonesia's digital financial literacy improved from 38.03 percent in 2019 to 49.68 percent in 2022 and 65.43 percent in 2024.

"Thus, if 65 percent, it means only two-thirds of Indonesia's population are literate in digital finance. There are still around one-third of the population whose literacy we must continue to improve," he explained here on Thursday.

Although most citizens already have digital financial literacy, he said, there are still people who are getting deceived and trapped in online gambling.

Further, there are still people who are using digital financial services such as digital wallets or e-wallets to support online gambling practices.

According to the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK), as of September 2024, the value of transactions suspected of being affiliated with online gambling reached Rp600 trillion (around US$38.6 billion).

"This is a big loss for the nation because the transactions do not give added value to the community," the minister said.

To this end, he highlighted that the community's digital financial literacy must continue to be improved so that people can be wiser in using digital financial services.

The Ministry of Communication and Informatics' efforts to eradicate online gambling have included blocking access to online gambling content and closing digital financial service accounts affiliated with online gambling activities.

Setiadi said that in the period from 2017 to October 2024, his ministry blocked access to around 4.7 million items of online gambling content.

During the period, the ministry also recommended the blocking of 7,599 bank accounts linked to online gambling to the OJK and the closing of 573 e-wallet accounts to Bank Indonesia.
