In addition to Ponorogo, several cities and districts in Indonesia — Bantul, Tangerang, Buleleng, Malang, and Makassar — made it to the list of top six names to be proposed to the UCCN.
Last year, Ponorogo missed out on being proposed to the UCCN.
"In 2023, we became the top six. At that time, Ponorogo Regency was eliminated by Surakarta and Depok. Indonesia nominated Surakarta city as its superior sector of craft and folk art instead. Even so, we would not give up or surrender," he informed.
Later, during a session held by UNESCO, Ponorogo Regency will vie for creative city status under the Craft and Folk Art category.
It will be promoted for its development of arts and culture, fashion, media, crafts, crafts as well as culinary and gastronomy arts.
A number of benefits can be obtained if it enters the world's creative city list, including in terms of facilitating cooperation between countries, introducing culture, and opening up opportunities for economic growth in the creative economy sector.
Moreover, Reog Ponorogo art has also been proposed to UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage.
"Of course, we really need to be grateful for the achievements. Indonesia is able to send two nominations at once, namely as a world creative city network and Reog Ponorogo, which was proposed at the UNESCO ICU and is just waiting for the hearing on December 2–7 (2024)," Edhie said.
