The Ministry of Religious Affairs participated in planting around 50,600 trees in various Islamic boarding schools (pesantrens) in the Greater Jakarta area to help reduce pollution under the Green Pesantren Movement.
"Green Pesantren is a program implemented by pesantrens to preserve the environment while building the awareness of santris (pesantren students) about the environment and get them accustomed to healthy conduct and lifestyle," the ministry's early education and pesantren director, Basnang Said, stated.
In the ministry's statement cited here on Friday, he noted that the Forestry and Parks Office of Jakarta provided the trees to support the Green Pesanstren Movement which was initiated by the organs of Nahdlatul Ulama, one of Indonesia's largest religious organizations.
The official participated in the movement by partaking in the planting of 50 trees at Al Hamid Pesantren in Cilangkap, East Jakarta, today. He said the school has a wide area suitable for environmental conservation efforts.
"It is quite easy to actualize this idea since we can plant and grow anything in Indonesia," he remarked.
Said then encouraged tens of thousands of pesantrens across Indonesia to emulate the movement to help Indonesia reduce carbon emissions considerably.
"Of course, such an activity will positively affect the learning atmosphere of santris. If we start from now, we will witness the changes in the next five years," he emphasized.
Furthermore, the official underscored that pesantrens have vast potential to play an active role in addressing environmental issues, adding to the fact that religions, including Islam, hold the protection of nature and Earth in high regard.
On that note, he emphasized that pesantrens should take concrete actions to slash carbon emissions and conserve groundwater.
