Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Institute for Security and Strategic Studies (ISESS) assessed that Budi Gunawan's tenure at the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) would provide him with valuable expertise for his role as coordinating political and security affairs minister.

"(He has) deep understanding of various security threats, both internal (threats) such as terrorism and separatism, and external threats, including the geopolitical situation," ISESS military observer Khairul Fahmi remarked here on Wednesday.

He highlighted that Gunawan had spent eight years leading the BIN. He deemed that Gunawan is well-networked and has extensive experience in analyzing global conflicts.

Fahmi believes this experience could better position Gunawan in completing some of the duties left behind by former coordinating minister for political, legal, and security affairs, Hadi Tjahjanto.

Earlier, Gunawan stated that as coordinating minister, he would address several problems in the country, such as online gambling, as well as strengthen the national cyber defense.

He affirmed that his side will strive to fight against the smuggling of illegal goods.

Moreover, Fahmi believes Gunawan is the right person to address these security problems as he handled matters related to state security while serving as BIN head.

In addition, Gunawan's track record includes holding the post of deputy chief of the National Police (Polri).

"Again, his mastery of (state) intelligence and his ability to manage sensitive information is a plus point that cannot be ignored," he remarked.

However, he stated that Gunawan will face new challenges in realizing a conducive political situation.

Gunawan is also expected to be a neutral figure and mediate all political conflicts in the country.
