Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers Abdul Kadir Karding instructed to strengthen protection measures for migrant workers while reducing placement costs.

President Prabowo Subianto has specifically tasked the ministry with reducing and minimizing exploitative treatment of migrant workers as well as cases of human trafficking, Karding stated here on Monday (Oct 28).

"The protection must be better so there will be no increasing number of cases due to our negligence or inability to work," he noted.

He further encouraged the overseas employment of Indonesian workers in safe destination countries devoid of exploitation.

Furthermore, Karding urged all regional offices of the Agency for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BP2MI) to start designing institutional organizational structures oriented towards strengthening vocational education and training before migrant workers depart.

"If someone is skilled, has mastered the language, and understands a little bit about the culture of the destination country, plus our supervision of their work contracts, then I am sure there will be no exploitation,” he remarked.

“According to our president's mandate, in this era, there should be no more exploitation (of Indonesian migrant workers). We protect their rights," he emphasized.

Karding underscored the need for all ministry officials to ensure professional, efficient management of migrant worker affairs

"I ask them to improve the system. We cut unnecessary steps so it will work fast and efficiently. As I am new (with this ministerial position), I must first learn the stages from training, recruiting, and sending until the return of Indonesian migrant workers,” he concluded.
