Head of the Center for Population Research of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Nawawi, made the statement during a discussion, which was followed online from Jakarta on Tuesday.
"The BP2MI, perceived as a vital institution that managed the migration of our workers, has seen its role elevated into a ministerial one. This (decision) signifies the government's seriousness in pursuing improvements in the protection and governance of Indonesian migrant workers," he said.
Nawawi noted that the upgrade of the BP2MI's status will be followed by a variety of strategic steps.
For instance, he said, the Ministry of Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers may invest greater efforts into assisting Indonesian citizens pursue jobs in non-traditional destinations, such as European countries.
"Europe could be a new international destination for Indonesian migrant workers, particularly those offering services in the health sector," he elaborated.
President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka have expanded the number of ministries from 34 to 48 in the Red and White Cabinet.
The reform entailed the separation of existing ministries into standalone ones, the establishment of a new coordinating ministry, and the transformation of state agencies into ministries.
In addition to the BP2MI, the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) has also been upgraded into the Ministry of Population and Family Development.
Concerning the employment sector, Prabowo has repeatedly expressed his commitment to driving his administration to not only beef up the protection of Indonesian citizens working abroad but also help create more overseas job opportunities.
