Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro, explored the potential for cooperation between Indonesia and the University of California, Berkeley, during a meeting with the university's chancellor, Rich Lyons, in Jakarta on Wednesday.

"One of the ways to develop Indonesia's human capital is increasing the number of Indonesian students who pursue education at UC Berkeley," he said in a statement released by his ministry here on Thursday.

During the meeting, the two discussed several initiatives to bolster collaboration between UC Berkeley and universities in Indonesia.

They include the possibility of realizing collaborative research that focuses on priority areas such as the development of human capital and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

While speaking to Lyons, Brodjonegoro expressed the hope that starting next year, the number of Indonesian students pursuing education at UC Berkeley will increase.

Meanwhile, Lyons said that Indonesia ranks 6th in terms of the countries of origin of UC Berkeley students.

He also provided information on one of the programs initiated by UC Berkeley, which teaches students how to think entrepreneurially.

The program, he explained, focuses on three aspects, namely critical thinking, communication, and collaboration or cooperation.

Wednesday's meeting also discussed the development of student exchange programs, joint research, and cooperation between the public and private sectors to support technological transformation in society.

Both Brodjonegoro and Lyons emphasized their commitment to building a science-based economy in Indonesia, where research can create concrete solutions and positive changes.

The collaboration marks an important step toward a bright future, where optimal expertise and resources can drive significant progress.

It is also seen as an example of the importance of synergy and collaboration in the fields of higher education and technology on the international stage.
