Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Social Affairs has sent assistance worth Rp6.2 billion (USD390 thousand) in total for residents affected by the eruptions of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores District, East Nusa Tenggara Province.

An official at the ministry's Directorate of Social Protection of Natural Disaster Victims, Taufik Syaera, informed that the ministry has sent disaster relief aid in four batches, with the most recent one arriving in East Flores from Kupang on Friday.

In a statement received from the ministry here on Saturday, he said that the latest assistance includes 340 sheets of mattresses, 80 packages of adult clothing, nine family tents, two multi-purpose tents, one dome tent, two sets of kitchen appliances, and 12 water purifiers.

The ministry has also delivered mobility aid for people with disabilities, including 45 wheelchairs for adults and children, 21 crutches, and 27 walking sticks, worth a total of Rp281.8 million (USD17.7 thousand).

Syaera then emphasized that the Ministry of Social Affairs has been striving to ensure the comfort of evacuees at refugee sites.

Among the measures taken by the central government to ensure this has been setting up spacious tents for laundry, he added.

The official further said that the ministry has dispatched disaster preparedness cadets (Tagana) to operate washing machines and collect water from wells and springs to assist the refugees.

"We have also provided detergents. Hence, the residents can simply come (to the tents) to receive comprehensive laundry services," he informed.

In addition, a team from the ministry has begun erecting culinary tents that will offer a variety of snacks, he said.
