Head of the Information Service of the Indonesian Navy's Fleet Command II, Colonel Widyo Sasongko, stated on Wednesday that the sea phase exercise included OOW Manex, photoEx, screenEx, gunnex, pubex, NSIC, and VBSS.

"The Indonesian Navy deployed KRI Frans Kaisiepo-368 from the Escort Ship Unit, KRI Tombak-629 from the Fast Boat Unit, Panther HS-1311 helicopter from the Indonesian Navy Aviation Center, and the VBSS team from KRI," he said.

Meanwhile, the Brunei Navy deployed KDB Darulaman (08), KDB Syafaat (19), and special forces Navy Surface Action Group (NAVSAG), he revealed.

Sasongko said that the Officer of the Watch Maneuvering Exercise (OOW Manex) is a naval training drill designed to enhance inter-warship communication skills among crew members.

Meanwhile, photoEx, or photo exercise, is a formation exercise for aerial photography, and screenEx, or screen exercise, is an exercise in creating screen formations at sea.

Meanwhile, gunnex, or gunnery exercise, is a ship's weapon firing exercise, and pubex, or publication exercise, is an inter-ship communication exercise using certain signals or codes.

Sasongko highlighted that warships from both countries also practiced NSIC, or naval surface interception communication, in blocking communication systems for surface ships and VBSS, or visit, board, search, and seizure, to intercept and infiltrate ships suspected of committing crimes, search, and confiscate evidence.

Helang Laut Joint Exercise is an activity routinely held by the Indonesian Navy and TLDB every two years alternately in the waters of Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam.

The joint exercise aims to improve the interoperability of the two parties and hone their capabilities in conducting various types of operations at sea.

At the opening ceremony on Monday (November 18), Commander of Fleet Command II, Rear Admiral Ariantyo Condrowibowo, highlighted that the exercise was part of the cooperation between the two countries to maintain security and stability in the region.

"As two maritime powers with historical, geographical, and diplomatic proximity, we are facing similar challenges in maintaining security and stability in the Southeast Asia region, especially in the North Natuna Sea and the Sulawesi Sea," he affirmed.
