Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra stated that death row convict in the drug smuggling case, Mary Jane Veloso, will be transferred to the Philippines as a prisoner.

Yusril emphasized that Mary Jane is not released from her sentence. The Indonesian government has agreed for transfers of prisoners with the Philippine government.

"Hence, it is not an acquittal, not a pardon, but (she will be) transferred to the Philippines as a prisoner," Yusril noted through a video statement on Wednesday.

He explained that the transfer would be conducted under several conditions, including that the Philippine government must recognize the Indonesian court's decision to sentence Mary Jane to death.

The Philippines must also carry out the remainder of Mary Jane's sentence if she has been transferred.

In addition, the Philippines is responsible for guaranteeing Mary Jane's safety during the transfer.

"We will hand over (Mary Jane), for example, at an airport in Indonesia, and then the responsibility for her security lies with the country concerned," Yusril noted.

Mary Jane's transfer is carried out at the request of the Philippine government. The Indonesian government received a request for Mary Jane's transfer from Philippine Justice Minister Jesus Crispin Remulla a few days ago.

According to Yusril, the decision to transfer Mary Jane to her country has been approved by President Prabowo Subianto.

"God willing, hopefully, in December this year, we can carry out the transfer," he remarked.

Earlier, Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., through his official Instagram account @bongbongmarcos, Wednesday, stated that Mary Jane Veloso would return to the Philippines following negotiations between the two countries for years.

"After over a decade of diplomacy and consultations with the Indonesian government, we managed to delay her execution long enough to reach an agreement to finally bring her back to the Philippines," President Marcos mentioned.

He also expressed gratitude to President Prabowo Subianto and the Indonesian government for their goodwill.

"This outcome is a reflection of the depth of our nation's partnership with Indonesia—united in a shared commitment to justice and compassion," he added.
