According to the minister, Indonesian films have now become "masters in their own country" and have gained widespread public acceptance as well as have vast potential to go global.
"The Ministry of Cultural Affairs encourages the film ecosystem to develop according to the hopes of the film fraternity," he told ANTARA after a meeting with the delegation of the "Women From Rote Island" film at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Thursday.
Support in the form of a budget, such as a film fund, is greatly needed, especially for films with national themes, children, or works of art that require affirmation, he added.
In a bid to support the film industry, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs is also actively collaborating with various stakeholders, including through support for festivals, such as the Jakarta Film Week and the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF).
Zon believes such an effort allows Indonesian filmmakers to meet with festival organizers from Busan, Toronto, and other international festivals.
"In addition to quality production, networking is also very important. Without a strong network, it is difficult for Indonesian films to be accepted and appreciated in other countries," he emphasized.
The minister is upbeat that such endeavors can strengthen the position of Indonesian films in the international arena while also opening up avenues for the works of Indonesian filmmakers to garner global recognition.
In fact, through sound production and a strong network, Indonesian films are expected to become the face of Indonesian culture in the eyes of the world.
Zon also expressed support for the film "Women from Rote Island" which will advance to the Academy Awards or the 2025 Oscars by taking strategic steps, such as advocacy and campaigns, in popularizing the film so that it can draw attention.
He added that this support is part of the joint efforts to bring Indonesian films to the international scene.
