Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Culture Fadli Zon has underlined the need to increase the variety of film genres to expand the market segment and Indonesia's domestic film market.

After the "Having Coffee with Film Workers" event at the Ministry of Education and Culture's office here on Monday, he said that the Indonesian film sector is still dominated by horror films.

He noted that films from other genres, such as action, comedy, drama, animation, musical, historical, and adventure, are also produced in the country, but their number is not as high compared to horror films.

Furthermore, he stressed the need for support for the production of children's films as well as films based on themes related to history and the nation's struggle for independence.

According to him, such genres have a large potential audience, even though they are not popular among producers.

"It was stated earlier that there are only three children's films listed in the Indonesian Film Festival Award (FFI) this year," he pointed out.

Other genres need affirmative support, he added.

"I think we need affirmations for films with national pride or historical themes," he stated.

According to the minister, more diverse film themes and genres could help attract more people to cinemas.

He said that the richness of Indonesian stories and culture can be a source of inspiration to produce quality films.

"Indonesia is very rich with stories and imagination," he said, adding that local folklore, national history, and stories of national heroes can be adapted into marketable films.

To improve the quality of domestic film production, the Ministry of Culture is also planning to hold screenwriting training, he informed.
