Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Counter Terrorism Agency (BNPT) recorded 1,703 suspected terrorists arrested from 2018 to October 2024 while exposing a surge in cyber-related violent extremism content, as authorities documented 43,204 instances in the same period.

According to the agency's head Commissioner General of Police Eddy Hartono, such activities occurred amid decreasing terrorist attacks in Indonesia to the point of a complete absence of such incidents within Indonesia from 2023 to 2024.

"This condition shows that the threat of extremism is currently entering an incubation period that requires the vigilance of all stakeholders," he stressed here on Tuesday.

Hence, the BNPT initiated the Strategic Communication Roadmap for the Prevention and Countermeasure of Violent Extremism Leading to Terrorism as a guideline for ministries and related institutions.

Eddy remarked that the roadmap aims to ensure a fast, precise, and accurate response in addressing all issues and communicating all strategic government policies related to the prevention and countermeasure of violent extremism leading to terrorism.

Responding to various future risk threats, he underscored the need for a paradigm shift that focused on prevention and human security efforts so that terrorism prevention in the future would encompass empowering communities and vulnerable and affected groups.

This would also directly contribute to human development and the achievement of sustainable development goals as outlined in the draft Presidential Regulation on the National Action Plan for the Prevention of Violent Extremism Leading to Terrorism phase two.

Thus, the BNPT calls on related stakeholders in Indonesia to increase their commitment and align paradigms regarding the urgency of the threat of cyberspace abuse for violent extremism leading to terrorism, as well as optimizing coordination between institutions.

He expressed hope that they can take down various pieces of content that lead to trials of radical terrorism, actively collaborate and empower the community through literacy in prevention programs, and establish partnerships with the private sector and digital platform service providers.

"This is all needed to create a cyberspace that is free from violent extremism that leads to terrorism," he remarked.
