Jakarta (ANTARA) - Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin emphasized the importance of continuing his ministry's partnership with the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) in supporting Indonesia's immunization program to reduce child mortality cases.

In the Health Ministry's statement received here on Thursday, he highlighted the positive impact of GAVI's support since 2002, which has helped Indonesia reduce the child mortality rate.

Earlier, Sadikin drew attention to the fact that Indonesia still lacked several antigens, but in 2023, the country managed to gain access to the Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV), and Rotavirus vaccine.

"Thanks to GAVI, we gained access to these vaccines. Sometimes it is not only funding that we need but also access," he remarked.

With GAVI's assistance, the Indonesian government can significantly increase the number of antigens.

Sadikin explained that every year, the Indonesian government vaccinates around 18 million people, with the number of antigen types currently reaching 14. He affirmed that under this program, millions of vaccine doses should be distributed across Indonesia, including remote areas.

"Because of this vaccination program, the child mortality rate declined significantly, though I still hope the result will be even better," he remarked.

The minister remarked that with a population of 270 million, the challenge in managing public health is huge.

He expressed hope that this initiative would strengthen global partnerships in supporting public health, especially in developing countries.

"We want to ensure no child is left behind in getting access to vaccination," he remarked.

GAVI is a global alliance that seeks to improve access to vaccines in developing countries. The alliance supports the procurement of affordable vaccines, strengthens immunization systems, and works with global partners to expand vaccination coverage.
