"We are currently trying to overcome this problem. We are working with the relevant ministries to assess all of these processes. Starting from recruitment until placement," he informed after a luncheon at the Saudi Arabian ambassador's residence in Jakarta on Wednesday.
According to him, the upstream process, starting from recruitment, work objectives, and accountability of service providers, to available employment fields, must be supervised properly to prevent untoward incidents.
The supervision must include preventing behavior by Indonesian citizens that could negatively impact Indonesia's image internationally.
The move refers to the arrest of a 24-year-old Indonesian national (WNI) at the end of November this year on charges of attempted robbery and murder of two elderly Japanese citizens, aged 81 and 78.
The Indonesian national, identified with the initials YAP, was arrested on November 27, 2024, for seriously injuring the Japanese citizens, who had to be hospitalized.
YAP was working as an intern at a building materials company in Chihama, Kakegawa, and had been in Japan for two years. The alleged reason behind his robbery attempt was online gambling.
"We will carry out monitoring and inventory as well because I also need the exact location. There are many cases so we need an inventory," Sugiono said.
Earlier, Minister of Migrant Workers Protection, Abdul Kadir Karding, said that 70 percent of victims of human trafficking are non-procedural migrant workers.
The majority of the victims are women and low-skilled workers. This group is vulnerable to exploitation, both physical, psychological, and economic, he added.
To tackle human trafficking crimes against Indonesian migrant workers, Karding plans to strengthen departure regulations by introducing a certification system and strengthening the protection system for the workers by increasing public awareness about safe departure procedures.
