Sukabumi, West Java (ANTARA) - Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated that land rehabilitation and conservation are the main solutions to prevent landslides and flash floods from recurring in Sukabumi District, West Java.

"Based on the landscape of the satellite imagery, we must immediately carry out strategic steps to anticipate similar incidents from recurring in Sukabumi, namely through land rehabilitation and conservation," he stated while distributing aid to residents affected by the disaster in Pabuaran Sub-district, Sukabumi District, on Sunday (December 15).

The minister said his side and the Sukabumi district government are responsible for maintaining environmental suitability in the region.

Hence, his ministry encourages government agencies, non-governmental institutions, and other stakeholders to jointly manage the environment through land rehabilitation and conservation activities as well as civil engineering.

Nurofiq highlighted that his side supports reforestation activities, including procuring multipurpose tree species or plants with various functions and uses.

Apart from land rehabilitation and conservation, Nurofiq emphasized that the ministry is increasing supervision of various activities utilizing natural resources to realize environmentally friendly activities.

The minister remarked that if any of those activities are found to threaten the environment or ignore the impact on the surrounding environment, their permits can be revoked, and sanctions can be imposed.

Meanwhile, deputy head of Sukabumi District, Iyos Somantri, expressed hope that the minister's visit to the disaster site would produce a long-term solution for the region.

He also expressed gratitude for the assistance offered by the ministry in the form of equipment to accommodate refugee activities.

Some 400 people were displaced due to the impact of landslides and flash floods in Sukabumi District, where they took refuge at the Lembursawah Village Office.

The assistance provided was in the form of a thousand PVC pipes for piping and portable toilets.

On Monday, the toilets are expected to be ready for use by the refugees.
