Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI) Abdul Kadir Karding stated that his ministry will use one-stop services as one of the solutions to reduce the number of non-procedural migrant workers.

"We will make the regulation in the future, so people who want to leave the country and work abroad must go through the one-stop channel," he remarked on Tuesday.

In a public dialogue on the protection of migrant workers, he explained that as many as 80 percent of migrant workers who were victims of exploitation left the country via irregular or illegal channels.

Karding pointed out that the government faces challenges in tracking the precise details of undocumented workers, such as their location, field of work, employment duration, and protection.

Consequently, Indonesia's citizens, including interns and seasonal workers, are expected to be systematically recorded in the one-stop channel data when seeking employment abroad.

"Anyone who wants to work abroad must be registered in our system. Once their data is in, we can monitor the type of job, the location, the employer, the job title, and whether they are protected there," Karding explained.

Furthermore, he affirmed that strengthening the vocational system and improving the quality of human resources are other ways to increase protection for Indonesian migrant workers.

He also pointed out that Indonesia could only meet the needs of 267,000 out of the 1 million migrant workers required.

According to the minister, the recruitment ecosystem, starting from recruitment, training, departure, and placement, must be systematically planned and built.

"We need to adequately prepare training institutions, transform the recruitment model, and prepare our representatives abroad so that we do not place all the burden on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," he said.
