Najamuddin welcomed the ruling, which aligns with the public's expectation that each political party should conduct the process of determining the presidential and vice presidential candidates in a planned, open, and free manner.
"With the ruling, each party is expected to be more attentive to fostering its members since they must prepare their best cadre to lead the nation," Najamuddin noted in his written statement on Thursday.
The speaker affirmed that the court's decision opened the door for all Indonesians to run for president and vice president in elections.
The DPD speaker also said his side supports abolishing the presidential threshold. He noted that the DPD had earlier petitioned for a judicial review of the threshold, although their request was denied.
With the presidential threshold quashed, he expected the government to implement more effective methods for conducting presidential elections. He also recommended that the presidential and legislative elections be held at separate times.
Najamuddin further suggested that political parties foster a "culture of consensus" among themselves to determine coalitions for presidential and vice presidential elections, which he believed should be capped at two in future elections.
Indonesia's Constitutional Court, in its ruling as read on Thursday, decided to quash the threshold for presidential and vice presidential candidacy in future elections after finding Article 222 of Law No. 7 of 2017 on Election, which regulates the threshold, unconstitutional.
As the Constitution grants political parties the right to nominate a presidential and vice presidential candidate in elections, the court viewed efforts to "simplify political parties" by utilizing the previous legislative elections results to limit presidential candidates amounted to an injustice to other political parties.
The court also observed that political powers in Indonesia are inclined to prefer presidential elections "to have only two candidate pairs," which, without any remedy, can cause polarization that divides the nation.
