Jakarta (ANTARA) - Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai has called for a review of firearm permits for law enforcement officers and civilians in light of recent incidents involving the misuse of firearms, which have resulted in harm to innocent individuals.

Pigai's appeal follows several shooting incidents, including one at the Tangerang-Merak Toll Rest Area reportedly involving a military officer, and the shooting of a lawyer in Bone, South Sulawesi.

"These cases demonstrate the misuse of firearms by both officers and civilians, which must be addressed. This needs to be evaluated as it violates the procedures and intended use of firearms," he stated in a press release on Friday.

Pigai explained that strict rules govern the use of firearms by officers and civilians, and these legal aspects and procedures must not be violated.

"The irresponsible use of firearms poses a threat to human rights and social stability," he emphasized.

According to the minister, the recent shooting incidents have not only created fear within the community but also jeopardized the right to life as outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

Article 3 of the UDHR asserts that everyone is entitled to life, liberty, and personal security. Therefore, the misuse of firearms that endangers individuals' safety constitutes a violation of human rights.

"An important aspect of human rights is freedom from fear. These recent shooting incidents clearly spread fear and pose a threat to life, while the state must protect its citizens," the minister emphasized.

Regarding the shooting incident on the Tangerang-Merak Toll Road, reportedly involving a military officer, Pigai expressed hope for a thorough investigation into the matter.

"The authorities must conduct a professional investigation for the sake of justice for the victims," he concluded.
