Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin received a visit from his Japanese counterpart, Gen. Nakatani, on Tuesday to explore the potential for an exchange of military technology to strengthen their countries' defense posture.

Brig. Gen. Frega Ferdinand Wenas Inkiriwang, head of the Indonesian Defense Ministry's Bureau of Defense Information, made the statement during a press conference following the bilateral meeting at the ministry's office in Central Jakarta.

He underlined that the Defense Ministry views Japan as one of the world's most formidable military powers, renowned for its cutting-edge defense technologies.

On that note, Inkiriwang remarked that his office is optimistic about the possibility of collaboration on military technology with Japan, which could improve the posture and capacity of the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI).

Moreover, he added that exchanging defense technology with Japan is expected to enhance Indonesia's capacity to counter potential cyber threats.

In view of this, the official stated that both the Indonesian and Japanese delegations were on the same page about the need to pay special attention to defense posture in cyberspace.

Inkiriwang, however, highlighted that the meeting did not touch upon the rumored co-manufacturing of a Mogami-class frigate between the two countries.

"The meeting discussed a transfer of defense technology. Based on my observations, it (the frigate) was not mentioned," he informed the media.

Earlier, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin personally welcomed Japan's Gen Nakatani at his office at around 10 a.m. local time.

During a military welcome ceremony, the two ministers saluted their respective national flags and conducted a troop inspection before proceeding to a convention room for a closed-door bilateral meeting.
