Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, in collaboration with the Indonesian Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM), successfully removed over 35 thousand pieces of content promoting illegal food, drug, and cosmetic products since 2018.

According to the ministry's press release here on Wednesday, most pieces of content promoting illegal products were found on social media platforms, such as Facebook.

Out of the total pieces of illegal product promotional content removed by the government, 23 thousand were from Meta's platforms, while 8,600 were identified on e-commerce platforms.

During a meeting with BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar at the ministry's office on Tuesday (January 7), Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid emphasized the government's commitment to protecting the public from exposure to illegal product promotional content in cyberspace.

She emphasized that the government will not hesitate to take strict measures, such as blocking sites, removing content, and taking down accounts promoting illegal products.

Ikrar affirmed that his agency and the ministry have striven to supervise the promotion and circulation of food, cosmetics, and drug products.

He highlighted that the promotion and sale of food and drug products through online platforms necessitate strict supervision.

Since 2021, BPOM has also identified over 1.3 million pieces of content promoting illegal products and submitted recommendations for blocking the content to relevant parties, including the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs.

Ikrar expressed hope that BPOM's cyber patrol surveillance system could be integrated with the ministry's complaint system to support the supervision of content promoting drug and food products on digital platforms.

"That way, reports submitted by BPOM can be handled faster and more effectively. Hence, the public is protected from dangerous products," he stated.
