Bogor District, West Java (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Environment on Thursday planted 2,450 mahogany and avocado seedlings in the upper reaches of the Ciliwung River in Bogor District, West Java.

The initiative involved officials from the local government, the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police (Polri), state-owned plantation company PTPN, and state-run oil and gas producer PT Pertamina.

During the event, Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq affirmed that his ministry would engage with more local governments to discuss the necessary seedlings, facilities, and infrastructure to facilitate similar activities in their regions.

He highlighted that the 119-kilometer-long Ciliwung River is a vital resource for about 2 million residents.

However, he said, the river's headwaters have been moderately polluted, while its middle and lower reaches are more severely polluted due to littering by some people.

Nurofiq also emphasized that his ministry would collaborate with TNI and Polri to encourage more responsible behavior among citizens toward rivers, aiming to leave a legacy of well-maintained waterways for the nation's future generations.

He stressed that comprehensive and ongoing efforts are required to improve the quality of the environment, including watersheds.

Nurofiq urged PTPN to designate its managed areas as ecotourism sites to revitalize natural ecosystems while offering recreational opportunities for the public.

Meanwhile, Acting Head of Bogor District, Bachril Bakri, commended the ministry for its initiative to restore the upper reaches of the Ciliwung River.

"We will continue tree-planting efforts to protect the headwaters of the Ciliwung River, which, in turn, will help prevent floods and environmental damage that could threaten Jakarta," he remarked.
