In a statement issued on Sunday, he said that India could also invest in Indonesia's nickel, which is important for the development of electric vehicle batteries.
“Cooperation in the nickel downstream sector can be very strategic for both countries," Lahadalia said in the statement.
He added that Indonesia could become a production center for electric vehicle batteries, while India plays a role as a major partner in the global supply chain.
The minister accompanied President Prabowo Subianto on a visit to New Delhi on Saturday.
He also highlighted Indonesia's significant role as one of the world's leading producers of strategic minerals.
According to Lahadalia, Indonesia's cooperation with India is a golden opportunity to accelerate the development of mineral and energy-based industries in Indonesia.
“This collaboration not only brings economic benefits but also opens opportunities for strengthening domestic industries through technology transfer and increasing human resource capacity,” he added.
Lahadalia expressed optimism that Indonesia could accelerate economic transformation while reinforcing its position as a major player in the global supply chain.
He argued that consistent downstream policies would have positive long-term impacts on the national economy and bilateral relations between the two countries.
Downstreaming is an unavoidable step to strengthen national economic resilience and open opportunities for international cooperation, including with India, Lahadalia remarked.
He emphasized that downstreaming is not just about increasing the added value of domestic commodities but also about creating jobs and accelerating the growth of the natural resource-based manufacturing industries.
“With downstreaming, we are not only exporting raw materials but also value-added products that can provide greater benefits to the national economy,” he said.
