“We share similar views on the Palestine issue. We continue to support Palestinian independence with the two-state solution as the only appropriate approach,” Prabowo remarked at a joint press briefing with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur on Monday (Jan 27).
Prabowo expressed approval for the ongoing ceasefire agreement between Palestinian resistance group Hamas and Israel, hoping it would serve as a foundational step towards lasting peace.
“We welcome the current ceasefire. Of course, we hope that this ceasefire will last," he remarked.
He affirmed that Indonesia and Malaysia also continue to demonstrate their commitment to supporting the rights of Palestinian people through active diplomacy at the regional and international levels.
Prabowo emphasized that support for Palestine remains a key priority in the foreign policy of both countries.
The initial six-week phase of a Gaza ceasefire agreement took effect on Jan. 19, suspending Israel’s genocidal war that has resulted in the deaths of more than 47,300 Palestinians, predominantly among women and children, and the injuries of more than 111,400 since Oct. 7, 2023.
The three-phase ceasefire agreement includes provisions for a prisoner exchange and aims to establish sustained calm, aiming for a permanent truce and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
The Israeli onslaught has left more than 11 thousand people missing, with widespread destruction and a humanitarian crisis that has claimed the lives of untold numbers of elderly people, women, and children.
Tens of thousands of Palestinians began returning to northern Gaza as part of the ceasefire deal.
The Israeli army had said Palestinians would be permitted to return on foot to northern Gaza via the Netzarim Corridor and the coastal Al-Rashid Street starting on Monday.
This development follows Qatar's announcement that the Palestinian group agreed to release female Israeli captive Arbel Yehud and two others by Friday (Jan 31) in exchange for 30 Palestinian prisoners.
On Saturday (Jan 25), Hamas freed four Israeli female soldiers in return for 200 Palestinian prisoners.
