Tangerang (ANTARA) - Indonesian authorities have removed 18.7 kilometers of an illegal sea fence spanning 30.16 kilometers in the waters of Tangerang district, Banten, head of the Indonesian Navy's (TNI-AL) Information Office, Commodore I Made Wira Hady, said.

He added that TNI-AL officers have been working with officials from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, police officers, and local fishermen to remove the sea fence along the coasts of Teluknaga, Mauk, and Kronjo sub-districts.

"The remaining length of the sea fence is 11.46 kilometers," he informed in Tangerang on Tuesday.

To execute the sea fence extraction, the TNI-AL has mobilized several types of boats, including two patrol vessels, six sea riders, five rigid buoyant boats, and two rigid-hulled inflatable boats.

Hady said that the removal of the fence was hindered by several factors, such as unfavorable weather and the presence of floating fish cages, which obstructed the maneuvers of the boats.

Earlier, on January 15, 2025, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries sealed off the sea fence whose discovery had surprised both the government and the public as its presence was considered mysterious.

Four days later, under the order of President Prabowo Subianto, the TNI-AL commenced the removal of the sea fence, which stretches across 16 villages in six sub-districts.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning (ATR) disclosed that the sea fence stands on 263 pieces of submerged land with right-to-build (HGB) and ownership certificates.

It was reported that the certificates belong to PT Intan Agung Makmur and PT Cahaya Inti Sentosa, subsidiaries of Agung Sedayu Group, which is the developer of the Pantai Indah Kapuk 2 satellite city.

On January 24, ATR Minister Nusron Wahid said that the government annulled at least 50 certificates, while the remainder were still under review.
